Fertilizer for Your Tomatoes

Have you ever wondered how to get the most out of your tomato plants?  It is always a challenge and we are always looking for new ways to provide nutritious healthy base for our home gardens..

Well here is an interesting idea to add to your plant nutrition library.  Gary Pilarchic, (From The Rusted Garden) is a vegetable gardening expert that shares in the following video how one can use two commonly available ingredients –

  • Bananas and
  • Whole Eggs,

as a fertilizer (In this video.. )

Gary shares how you can do this by burying a whole banana and an egg beneath a tomato plant and then goes on to explain why it works.  He talks about his experiment and the science behind it.  It is a simple but effective method, so follow the steps below.

THE SIMPLE METHOD

Simply dig a hole and put your banana and egg at the bottom of it in the fall.  Then in the following spring plant your tomatoes on top and see how they grow!  (By that time they will have had a good 6 months or so to get ready…)

Basically the egg and banana begin to rot and break down in the soil beneath the tomato plant, providing a rich nutrient source for the tomato plant’s root stock.  The roots grow down into the decaying/decayed matter and are then able to suck those nutrients up into the plant.

How the Fertilizer Works

The decomposing Bananas and Egg provide a rich mix of of phosphate, sulphur calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium which give the tomato plant a generous boost and put it well on the way to providing an abundance of fruit for your next harvest.

Keep an eye out as well for a follow up video which shows the final results of this project, so you can see just how well this works.  And make sure to save your old bananas and eggs, and put them in the soil instead of throwing them out if they get too old.  Then you too can have your own home-made fertilizer for your tomatoes.
