She had to leave her home in Gloucestershire due to financial trouble and moved to Panama with her husband, where she had some of her toughest struggles, eventually returned back to the UK, did a deal with Debenhams for her collection Nine and finally got back to her beloved Cotswolds.

Michelle Obama wife of President Obama, is a total advocate of organic gardening and she doesn’t just talk about it, she produces it too.  Michelle Obama’s organic garden at the Whitehouse was a high profile development in the organic celebrity world.

Not since Roosevelt’s victory garden of the 1940s had there been a proper garden at Pennsylvania Avenue’s most famous address.

The plot has a full 55 vegetable and fruit varieties, and was part planted by local school children. Michelle Obama has apparently even enlisted her husband to do a bit of the weeding.  Planted in consultation with the Whitehouse’s chefs, the organic vegetable garden will provide food for the first families’ meals.

However, according to the first Lady, the main function of the garden will be educational: informing children of the benefits of healthy, local fruits and veg. This is contextualised by the US’s especially severe obesity and diabetes concerns.

8) Oprah Winfrey

Who doesn’t know Oprah Winfrey, our beloved Media mogul?  Well she has really taken gardening to the next level. In between running “O” The Oprah Magazine and The Oprah Winfrey Network, Oprah found the time to turn 16 acres of her Maui estate into a fully functional garden.  It is  located almost 4,000 feet high on the side of a dormant volcano Haleakala and gets plenty of rain and sun.

It has a 100 species of vegetables, fruits, and herbs. But it is not just a hobby as her vision is to supply food to her local Maui community where typically most of the food is shipped or flown in. “We realized if we could grow delicious food ourselves, we could share it.” And that’s just what Oprah’s doing.

With the help of friend Bob Greene, Oprah is changing the way she eats and the way much of Maui receives food. After testing several varieties of planting methods to ensure that each vegetable was rich with vital nutrients, Oprah and Greene found a farming method that is quickly creating results. The rich Maui soil now allows Oprah’s farm to produce 145 pounds of food each week, and also has hens which supply eggs.

Hopefully this will bring attention to growing local food on the island (or anywhere in the world where this can be replicated), and not only provide inspiration for local farmers, but reduce costs, and the carbon footprint of getting food to the island from other places!

7) Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt – you know them from so many movies like Mr. and Mrs Smith, Lara Croft Tomb Raider and the Oceans 11 franchise and their incredible charity work – acquired a 1000 acre vineyard in the south of France.  While I doubt you’d see Angelina in mud boots and a big floppy hat tying vines, you never know.  Like many of the celebrities on this list they are both quite serious about eating organic food whenever possible, and treat themselves to the organic wine from their own vineyard.

Unfortunately due to events in the September 2016, most notably divorce, their future remains uncertain.  While they sort out their personal difficulties on a world stage, (which must be intensely difficult as sorting out personal problems is difficult at the best of times without a huge audience magnifying the effects) lets hope they can work things out in the best interest of their kids, and continue to be the best they can be!

6) Martha Stewart

Not surprisingly, Martha Stewart ,  bestselling author, publisher of the Martha Stewart Living magazine as well as a host of two long running TV shows “Martha 2005-2012” and “Martha Stewart Living 1993 to 2005”, may be the most accomplished celebrity gardener. From her books, videos, and websites dedicated to teaching others about home living, Stewart has made a living creating and maintaining a variety of gardens. And she makes good use of her knowledge.

At her Cantitoe Corners home in New York, Martha Stewart has created a fully functional vegetable garden. The 90 by 150 foot garden is encased by a seven foot tall metal fence to keep large and small animals away. Within the metal fence are vegetables ranging from kale, brussel sprouts, cabbage, broccoli, tomatoes, pumpkins, onions, several varieties of lettuce, and potatoes. Being the queen of tips and tricks gives Martha a gardening advantage. She utilizes salt hay for mulching because it minimizes weeds and retains moisture, mustard greens are planted alongside kale, cabbage, and broccoli to trap flea beetles, and patches of hay are placed below pumpkins to prevent early rotting and bruising during growth.

5) Julia Roberts

Most likely you didn’t know that this Pretty Woman had a passion for sustainable living and organic gardening.  Who would guess that she prefers munching away with her children on kale chips rather than greasy French fries (Or perhaps that’s why she looks so good!)

Yes, the stunning Julia Roberts is one of those people, who would have her children munching on kale chips rather than some greasy French fries. What’s more, she even composts her kitchen waste and makes sure her garden gets back all those nutrients from leftover meals. Now, that’s what you call a pretty ‘green’ woman!

Mother of Sunday Rose, and married to musician Keith Urban, the couple has settled down on a farm in Nashville, Tennessee, where Nicole grows her own organic vegetable garden. What’s more, even Nicole’s mother and sister are avid gardeners. Apparently she spends hours tending to her vegetables so that she can feed her family fresh, organic, and home-grown produce. Calling her organic garden “just a hobby”, Kidman is certainly one green celebrity who literally understands the joy of eating out of the garden.

3) Jake Gyllenhaal

If you thought you loved Jake Gyllenhaal (famous for his role in Brokeback Mountain) for that sexy beard, that amazing body, and those deep blue eyes (oh and also the fact that he’s a vegan and he loves animals), here’s another reason – he loves gardening! Apart from looking ridiculously good, Jake enjoys gardening and eating a healthy diet with plenty of fresh veggies from his own organic garden. Moreover, he has also been urging American school kids to adopt healthy eating habits and learn the importance of vegetable gardening.  So much, that he also promoted the Edible Schoolyard Project, a program that was started to teach children to grow and cook their own food, so as to prevent obesity in children. Is there any man out there more perfect than Jake Gyllenhaal?

Gyllenhaal was born in Los Angeles, California, the son of film producer and screenwriter Naomi Foner (née Achs) and film director Stephen Gyllenhaal. His parents insisted that he have summer jobs to support himself and he thus worked as a lifeguard and as a busboy at a restaurant operated by a family friend.

His film and stage careers have resulted in a multitude of award nominations and wins, one of the best being for his role in Brokeback Mountain with Heath Ledger. The film went on to win four Golden Globe Awards, four British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) Awards, and three Academy Awards.

2) Prince Charles

Of all the celebrities who garden, His Royal Highness Prince Charles of Wales has devoted the largest amount of years and space to his gardens. In fact, Prince Charles has devoted so much time and space to his gardens that they have become a showcased area for groups to tour.

Begun in 1980, the Highgrove House – Prince Charles’ country estate– consists of 37 acres of organic gardens. Each garden is unique in its own way. Over four acres of the garden is a wildflower meadow. There are around 32 different varieties of endangered native plants within the wildflower meadow.

In addition to the meadow, there is a Thyme Walk, a variety of themed flower gardens, and the Walled Kitchen Garden. There are enough fruits and vegetables grown in the Walled Kitchen Garden to allow the house to achieve full self-sufficiency.

The Prince’s most loved vegetables, such as Charlotte potatoes, leeks, spring cabbage, brussel sprouts and carrots are grown alongside strawberries and a wide variety of apples. While the large size and beautifully maintained gardens are impressive, what’s more alluring about the gardens is that they are one-hundred percent organic.

The wildflower meadow is maintained by grazing sheep, cows are brought in to eat the overhang branches of over 10,000 trees, all of the water used on the gardens is recycled, and only organic materials are used to maintain the lush vegetation.

And finally…….

1) Ringo Starr

This famous drummer from one the most popular rock bands the history of music has ever produced, happens to be a passionate gardener. Yes, the famous Ringo Starr, who handled the drumsticks for the legendary rock band the Beatles, also knows his way around flowers and vegetables. He has a vegetable patch in his garden and loves growing his own vegetable.  A regular attendee at the Chelsea Flower Show along with his wife Barbara, Starr is known to be fan of horticulture, just like his band mate, the late George Harrison.

Whether it is wildflowers, greens, or fruits, the truth is that many celebrities are now using organic methods to grow and maintain their gardens. They are realizing the bad health effects of the traditional chemicals in wide use today and are choosing to use natural, organic horticultural methods to keep their vegetables, fruits, and flowers, as well as their clothing and bedding, free of pesticides and chemicals.

Why are they embracing the organic lifestyle and turning to organic gardening? For good reasons. Some want to raise awareness about the poor diets of children in America, while others enjoy creating a fun, healthy, and educational family experience with their children and loved ones. Whatever their reasons, many celebrities have now caught the organic gardening bug and are not only finding their green thumbs, but also making organic gardening cool and trendy for the rest of us.
