Natural Ways to Kill Garden Weeds

Nothing else (other than pests) could ruin your garden like weeds. Those unwelcome guests that rob your plants of nutrients and space are just annoying, and everything that you must have been thinking all this time is how you could get rid of them without using harmful chemicals. Luckily, there are various weed-killing weapons that you can find around your house.

Eradicating Garden Weeds Using Household Items

  1. Vinegar. If you’ve got dandelions sprouting up in your patio cracks, you can make them vanish by simply spraying these uninvited wild plants with full-strength white or apple cider vinegar. You may give each plant a single dose of vinegar in its midsection early in the season then aim another shot near the stem at ground level so this acidic substance can soak down the plant roots.
  2. Baking soda. Another way to kill those weeds and grasses from springing up in the crevices of your driveways or walkways is by sprinkling handfuls of baking soda onto the concrete and simply sweeping it into those cracks. Adding sodium to this weed-killing powder will make it even more difficult for dandelions and their unwanted friends to grow.
  3. Bleach. You can also get rid of weeds by pouring a little amount of undiluted bleach over the unwanted plants. After a couple of days, you can start pulling them out; the bleach will keep them from budding again.
  4. Salt. Kill weeds by simply spreading salt directly onto the weeds that sprout between the concrete bricks and then sprinkle with water. Another equally effective method is by bringing a solution of one cup of salt in two cups of water to a boil, and then pouring the substance directly on the weeds.
  5. Vodka. Try mixing one ounce of vodka, a few drops of liquid dish soap, and two cups of water in a spray bottle. Start drenching the weeds growing in direct sunlight until the mixture runs off. The alcohol will kill the plant by breaking down the waxy cuticle that covers the leaves; thus, leaving them susceptible to dehydration.
  6. Soap. Another effective method of wiping out weeds is the use of soap. Its oil can break down hairy weed surfaces which make them vulnerable to desiccants. So try adding a few drops of liquid dish detergent to vodka or vinegar and then spray on the plant’s leaves.
  7. Boiling water. You can also do away with weeds by pouring boiling water on it which will burn it up. This is especially useful in whacking driveway or walkway weeds since the hot water can run off impervious surfaces then cool down before it even reaches the border plants.
  8. Other items. Newspapers, old shower curtains, and carpet samples can be spread out between rows or in garden paths to keep weeds from ever showing their uninvited heads. By topping the area crowded by weeds with these materials, sunlight and oxygen will be blocked from reaching the soil; thus, smother those which have already sprung up as well as prevent the new ones from growing. Just throw down the layers, wet it to hold them down, and then cover with an inch or two of mulch.
